About the Role
Senior / Principal Mechanical Design Engineer
London Bridge | Hybrid: 3 Office / 2 Home
£55,000 - £68,000
Working on buildings that already exist means you solve problems, not just follow designs.
You join a consultancy where engineering isn’t about perfect conditions. Most projects are within existing, live environments, tight spaces, legacy systems, and unknowns. You’re working around what’s already there, not starting from scratch, which means every project requires real thought and problem-solving.
Healthcare is a core focus, but it’s far from repetitive. Projects often include mixed-use elements within hospitals...think reatil, and they’re expanding into other sectors too. That means more variety, and a broader skillset that keeps you adaptable as your career develops.
You’re involved from early design through to construction and commissioning. With projects all at different stages, some fast-moving, others more complex, the work stays varied and engaging. You don’t just design systems, you see how they’re built and how they perform.
What you’ll do
- Lead mechanical design from survey to delivery, giving you ownership across the full process
- Work with clients, contractors and design teams, keeping projects aligned and progressing smoothly
- Stay involved through construction and commissioning, so you see designs translate into reality
- Support cost planning and tender reviews, helping projects land commercially as well as technically
- Support and mentor junior engineers, strengthening the team around you
- Advise on energy use and system performance, improving efficiency and long-term outcomes
What you’ll need
- Experience delivering mechanical design across multiple project stages
- Confidence working in live or complex environments where problem-solving is key
- Ability to engage with clients and contractors, not just sit behind a screen
- A mindset geared towards learning, collaboration and taking ownership
A bit about the company
The structure is flat, with teams spread across two offices, which means you’re not hidden behind layers of management. Communication is direct, and support is always there when you need it.
It’s a genuinely supportive environment where people are encouraged to ask questions and learn. You’re not expected to know everything, and when something’s new, there’s always someone willing to help.
You’ll typically handle 2–3 projects at a time, all at different stages, keeping the workload varied but manageable. There’s no pressure to work late, and flexibility is handled through trust and communication. The standard is three days in the office, but there’s room to flex when life happens.
CPDs run regularly, often every few weeks, covering real systems, products and applications. Combined with exposure to site and commissioning, it means you develop faster and become a more well-rounded engineer than you would in a more segmented consultancy.
